帝国 - Empire - 2012, Collage and enamel on Glass. W14'' X H11''

Every empire has the same vortex of direct and indirect conquests, control by force, money and eventually control and further expansion
through cultural dominance. Every empire also gets plagued by the hubris or extreme self-pride, over confidence or self-professed exceptionalism that most of the time brings the collapse to the empire itself.  However, that “cultural” or it could be religious or ideological part of the vortex is the part that can sustain the hubris even when the empire collapses. Although in this piece and different setups around it I obviously focused on Chinese empire, I feel that the meaning is universal.

This piece was originally created in 2019 and it has touch points (shared images and ideas) with my SOS project.  However, with Covid-19 crisis, killing of George Floyd and subsequent demonstrations all around USA during 2020 I felt that the piece itself needs additional layers of explanations. What better to use to chart the enigma of the society in strife than the jigsaw puzzle and images, events and feelings that are sort of hiding behind that puzzle.

World politics is a multi-layered jigsaw puzzle. Layers and pieces of misunderstanding, aspiration and honorable and not so honorable ideas          that resulted in a messy international situation and messy piece of art.
